The riser tag is the last thing we put on the wall

A sprinkler system starts as a hydraulic calculation, not a pipe run. Our design department works from the building's actual water supply and occupancy hazard, sizes the mains and branch lines against that calculation, and only then releases drawings to the crew. Installation follows the drawings exactly, because the plates bolted beside the riser will be checked against them later by someone who was not on the job. Inspection and maintenance keep that same system doing what the calculation said it would do, year after year, under Texas Fire Sprinkler Certificate of Registration SCR-0383.

What the inspection tag actually means

The pink tag hanging from the standpipe is not decoration. It carries the date of the last inspection, the name of the company that performed it, and a phone number for whoever finds it next. Behind it sits the hydraulic calculation plate, stamped with the job name and the date the system went in. Together they are the proof that the alarm check valves, the gauges and the OS&Y handwheels were tested by someone who signed for the result, not just looked at them from the floor.

NICET certification is issued to the person who did the layout, not to the company letterhead. David Welcher holds Level IV in Water-Based Systems Layout, the highest grade NICET awards in that discipline, along with Level III in Inspection and Testing, Level III in Special Hazards and Level II in Fire Alarm Systems. He is not the only certified name on the roster.

The system does not stop at the building wall.

Underground fire mains are the part of the system nobody sees once the trench is closed, which is exactly why they get poured, wrapped and pressure-tested before the backfill goes back in. In 2015 we ran 4,200 feet of HDPE underground fire main for Buckeye Pipeline, the same discipline that feeds risers on smaller commercial jobs across Texas.

Wherever a fire system draws off a potable water supply, backflow prevention assembly testing is required to keep the two sides separated. Our testers hold that licence and test the assemblies annually, on schedule, with the paperwork filed the same week.
